Frequently Asked Questions

We’re here to help.

If you’re new to meditation, consider it to be a pause button for your thoughts. Set a timer for 5 minutes and select one thing to focus on, like your breath, a calm word, or sounds around you. Close your eyes and take some deep breaths, and notice how your body feels. If your mind wanders, it’s OK, just bring your focus back to breathing. Your goal should not be perfection, but to practice being present.

Meditation is a powerful tool used to calm your mind, reduce stress, and reconnect with your inner self. You don’t need any prior experience to begin. At Soul Center OC, our beginner-friendly meditation classes are designed to help you ease into the practice with help from our trained facilitators. They provide a supportive space to explore breathwork, mindfulness, and visualization.

If your mind keeps bouncing around during meditation, it’s completely normal. Count your breath and notice your sensations, so it gives your mind a rhythm to follow. Doing a body scan by checking in with each area of your body from head to toe can provide you with focused awareness. When thoughts intrude, label them as daydreaming or remembering to create more space between your mind and the distraction. Meditation techniques can help you build a more calming relationship with your attention and keep you present.

You don’t need anything fancy to start meditating. A quiet space, a comfortable seat, and a few minutes of your time are enough. Find a quiet spot, sit or lie down, and focus on your breath or a calming word. If you’re comfortable and can minimize distractions, you’re ready to start. Optional items could be cushions, mats, or calming music. What matters is your willingness to pause and pay attention.

You don’t need to meditate for long to feel the benefits. Our meditations at Soul Center are in 20 minute, 30 minute, 45, and 60 minute intervals. You can choose what feels right for your experience level and schedule. Each meditation for beginners is guided by one of our trained professionals who gently leads the practice, making it easy to stay present.

Lying down is a perfectly valid way to practice mindfulness meditation, especially if you have physical limitations or chronic pain. Some find that lying flat on a mat helps them focus on breath and body awareness without getting distracted. Stay alert and engaged, and ensure you’re comfortable and present. Lying down allows you to tune into your body’s sensations and breath.
